Want to know what the future holds? Central Floridians don’t have to travel far to pursue these answers. Nestled in the heart of Volusia County is the unincorporated town of Cassadaga, best known as the Psychic Capital of the World. Cassadaga was founded in the late 1800s in true Florida fashion, as its founder George Colby was guided by a vision to travel south to Florida. He formed the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, and the rest is history.

Flash forward to present day, and the town has exactly the eclectic, quirky vibe one might expect. The perfect place to begin your visit is at the Cassadaga Hotel. Whether you’re an out-of-towner looking for a place to stay for the night or you’re simply visiting for the afternoon, step into the historic hotel and enjoy the beautiful interiors, grab a cup of coffee, do a little shopping in the gift shop, or schedule a reading. The hotel has several in-house psychics and mediums, and throughout the year, offers classes in reiki, tarot, and more.

No trip is complete without a psychic reading. In the times I’ve visited, I’ve gone to two separate places and received very different readings. At The Purple Rose, I had my tarot cards read a few years ago and things were looking pretty bleak (you don’t have to be a psychic to know that the Three of Swords is not a happy card to pull from the deck). However, I enjoyed my reading (I kept it short at about 15-20 minutes, but you can choose a longer session) and a lot of what the psychic told me later did come true. They also offer couples readings and sell metaphysical items like crystals.

On my most recent trip to Cassadaga, I received a crystal ball reading at the Cassadaga Spiritualist Psychic Center, which also offers tarot card and palm readings, astrology charts, numerology reports, and more. I’ll keep the details of this particular visit to myself, but the reading was incredibly relevant and brought up some very specific things in my life, so I will wholeheartedly recommend this psychic center!

If you’re looking for something fun to do after your reading, DeLand is no more than a hop, skip, and a jump away. DeLand’s historic downtown is home to countless antique shops and other cool businesses. Grab lunch at Byte Bistro or The Table before hitting the stores. Your Health in Action: 5 Wellness Books Worth Reading

As a writer, I constantly try to prioritize reading as a part of my daily life. (Some years, I’m more successful than others!) From fiction and poetry to nonfiction and memoirs, I try to vary my genres as much as possible to broaden my perspective and inspire my own creativity. Of course, because wellness is a huge focus for me and my blog, I often gravitate toward personal development books and podcasts.

1. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
Okay, let’s be real: unless this is the first time you’ve stumbled upon my blog, you had to suspect this book was going to be on the list! For those who are unfamiliar with The Happiness Project, author Gretchen Rubin incorporates scientific research on happiness to undergo a year-long experiment to live a happier life. Each month takes on a different theme, such as boosting energy, focusing on her marriage, learning something new, etc. The book provides practical, easy-to-implement tips for readers, as Gretchen shares what worked for her. Inspired by her work, I ended up creating my own happiness project for 2019. (You can read about my progress for the month of January here.) Be sure to check out Gretchen’s podcast as well!

2. Food Freedom Forever by Melissa Hartwig
As a fan of The Whole30, I was especially excited when co-creator Melissa Hartwig released Food Freedom Forever. This book focuses on what to do after you’ve tackled the intense elimination diet. How do you let go of your bad habits and baggage around food? Melissa provides a lot of well-researched tips for habit change and creating a healthier relationship with food and body-image. My copy has about a million Post-It notes inside, and is back at the top of my list for required reading in 2019.

3. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein
If you believe in the law of attraction, The Universe Has Your Back is for you. Gabby Bernstein’s book on transforming fear to faith is worth exploring if you’re experiencing any major obstacles in your life right now. The book also provides several meditative practices to help you listen to your intuition and learn to trust yourself, while quieting those negative voices.

4. The Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda by Sahara Rose
Ayurveda is an ancient system of Eastern medicine and the sister science to yoga. Thanks to Sahara Rose’s book The Idiot’s Guide to Ayurvedanon-practitioners like me can learn all about Ayurveda and how we can incorporate it into our daily lives. You’ll be able to identify your mind-body type (or “dosha”) and learn the best foods, routines, and other practices to achieve mind-body balance.

5. Rising Strong by Brené Brown
Brené Brown is a renowned social worker known for her research on shame and vulnerability (check out her TED Talk!), and as someone who struggles with opening up about her feelings, I was excited to finally pick up one of her books. Rising Strong focuses on resiliency, coming back from a perceived failure, and changing the narratives we tell ourselves. If you’re struggling to reset after a fall, I highly recommend this book!

Your Health in Action: 5 Podcasts to Make Your Life Happier and Healthier

Over the past few months, I’ve developed a brand new addiction to podcasts. As someone whose job requires her to spend a lot of time on the road, I hate thinking about how little I can accomplish while driving. (The most useful gift anyone could ever give me would be a personal driver!) As I’ve begun tuning in to health and wellness podcasts, my drive time has become more enjoyable, and ultimately, much more productive. These podcasts have also been great to listen to while getting ready in the morning before work, even if they do cut in to my reality TV catch-up time! 🙂

Hosted by Krista Williams and Lindsey Simcik, Almost 30 focuses on a variety of topics, from forgiving our 20s selves to taking care of our skin and practicing holistic nutrition. The hosts are funny, but their tips are practical, and I absolutely love the rapport they have with their guests and with each other.

I first heard Jordan Younger, the show’s host, on another podcast (listed later in this post!), and found her advice to be relatable and easy to follow. Jordan, a former vegan, has shifted her focus to a more balanced life in the wellness community. Her episodes integrate wellness hacks with spirituality, and I have truly enjoyed learning from the different guests who appear on the show.

I read Gretchen’s book, The Happiness Project, earlier this year — and have been recommending it to everyone I know! Her advice on finding happiness is down-to-earth and easy to implement in our daily lives, so when I heard about her podcast, I knew I had to give it a listen. She hosts the show with her sister, Elizabeth Craft, and I absolutely love the organized format and listener feedback. She also records weekly one-minute “little” episodes, which are fun to listen to for an instant boost of happiness.

5. Stronger
This podcast is hosted by Livestrong and is the very first podcast I ever listened to. Although there aren’t a ton of episodes out yet, the content has been eye-opening and incredibly practical.
